Behind the Science
Spring Point Project provides the source (pigs) needed to complement the science (islet cell xenotransplantation). Spring Point Project has selected a special strain of pigs with high islet cell yield for transplantation. Bacteria and viruses were removed from the pig herd, and the animals are housed in such a way so they remain free of such infectious agents – the designated pathogen-free (DPF) status. The design of the facility, operations within the facility and the herd’s DPF status are in compliance with regulatory guidance regarding the clinical application of xenotransplantation products. These details have been documented in a submission to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, which has received a favorable response. |
